Stamped Concrete Pool Deck Adds Touch of Elegance to Impressive Home

Such a stunning vanishing edge pool should surely complement an impressive home. The home, a 9,000 square foot estate was originally purchased in 2002 as a foreclosure for $146,000. Isaac Jonker, part owner of Nobel Concrete in Jenison, Mich., and cousin of the homeowner, James Eerdmans, says, "the house was not livable when my cousin bought it. He had to gut it to its shell and put a lot into it." After intensive remodeling, the house now includes 16 acres with a 1,200 square foot guest house, and was showcased in the Spring Parade of Homes in Grand Rapids, Mich., with a price tag of $2.8 million.

According to an article in The Grand Rapids Press, "the home [is] filled with rich woodwork, custom leaded-glass interior windows, an opulent master bathroom and more than 50 8-by-3-foot windows.

The three-stall garage includes a workout room, music studio and full bath for users of the infinity edge pool outside. And the basement has a theater room and a custom bar with a copper footrest."

Nobel Concrete installed stamped concrete around the home including the sidewalks, an approach to the garage and the 2,500 square foot pool deck.

Stamped Concrete Pool Deck Details
The vanishing edge pool with integral firepit was designed with a 6x6 diamond pattern stamped with a seamless texture called heavy stone. "We can cut the diamonds at any size," says Jonker, "but we chose 6x6. We try to lay it out to give it a good look based on the size of the project." The diamonds serve double duty as control joints and as decorative accents.

The pool deck was colored in light wheat, a color from Prism Integral Colors with Shale Gray release agent by Bomanite. "We think of the release like an accent color," says Jonker.

"We use it to pull out the color of trim on the house or from stones in the landscape." The border around the pool coping is a different color. "It's coquina color hardener by Bomanite, finished with a light broom finish.

The deck was sealed with two coats of solvent-based acrylic sealer with nonslip additive. "We use Vexcon AC-1315," says Jonker.

Pool Deck Challenges
"The size of the project was the most challenging," says Jonker. "We were able to do the entire pool deck in one pour. We didn't have to break it up into multiple pours." One continuous pour allowed the color of the concrete to remain consistent. "There were no color lines from one pour to the next," explains Jonker.
