Decorative Garage Floor Coating Installs in One Day

Roll On Rock’s® clear polyurea topcoat gives the surface a high-gloss finish while providing excellent resistance to chemicals, abrasion, and hot tire marks. Because the epoxy penetrates deeply into the concrete, it forms a strong bond to ensure that the coating will never peel or flake.

Roll On Rock® flooring kits include enough decorative flakes to broadcast onto the wet epoxy flooring to the point of full coverage, resulting in a uniform blanket of flake over the entire concrete floor. A variety of decorative looks can be achieved by choosing from different color blends and sizes of flakes.

Often the biggest deterrent to people installing a new garage floor coating isn’t the cost, it’s the inconvenince. The job can take several days or longer to complete, and homeowners must find a place for their cars, lawn mowers, and other belongings until the floor can be put back into service. “Among the many qualities the Roll On Rock® system offers is the ability to complete a project in one day after the surface has been properly cleaned and prepped. This is important for both the contractor and the customer. It will save on labor costs and travel time for the contractor and downtime for the customer, who may have to store their belongings on the driveway or in a rented self-storage bin during the project,” says Versatile Building Products sales manager Jimmy McGhee.

The system uses a proprietary epoxy that “wicks” into the concrete, resulting in an ultra-strong bond and faster drying time. “With our direct-to-concrete epoxy for receiving the vinyl chips and the use of our accelerator for the primer base coat, the epoxy flooring will dry to a hard state to in just 2 hours and be ready to scrape and top coat with our ultra-fast drying Polyurea topcoat the same day,” says McGhee.

How to apply

The Roll On Rock® system was developed for use by professional coating installers as well as do-it-yourselfers. The clear polyurea sealer is easy to apply by roller and brush. It also dries fast, and in most cases you can return the items to your garage several hours after the topcoat has been applied and the car can be parked on it in a day or two. “We also offer a retarder that will extend the potlife, which can be really helpful for new installers,” says McGhee.

The epoxy provides enough drying time to give the installer a broad window for applying the flakes, typically between 15 to 45 minutes after application.

The system can be applied to all cured concrete after it is cleaned with a liquid cleaner/degreaser. “We also recommend using our environmentally friendly Eco Profiler etching compound and lightly grinding the concrete surface to achieve the best coating penetration and binding,” says McGhee.

Decorative options

A variety of decorative looks can be achieved by choosing from different color blends and sizes of flakes, which are available in 36 hues and sizes ranging from 1/32 to 1 inch. “The 1/32-inch flake gives you the look of a quartz floor without the cost involved,” says McGhee. “You can also use the different flake sizes along with decorative stencils or tape to create borders and stone or brick patterns. We also offer a mica flake that produces a multi-gem diamond effect for a truly elegant look.”

Where to use

In addition to residential garage floors, Roll On Rock® is suitable for use on industrial, commercial, and retail concrete floors. “Customers are getting the same durable toughness in their garages as in an automotive workshop. The system can also be used with a smaller flake size for pool decks to create a sand-like finish,” says McGhee.

Roll On Rock® is ideal for demanding environments exposed to impact, abrasion, and chemicals because it produces a tough, low-maintenance surface. General cleaning involves removing loose dirt and debris by sweeping and more stubborn stains by mopping with a mild, environmentally safe detergent.
