At ‘Ritas Cantina, a newly remodeled poolside restaurant at Harrah’s Rincon Casino, Valley Center, Calif., a facelift to the existing tile floor transformed the space into a colorful south-of-the-border getaway. A concrete coating bursting with vibrant flower-petal designs creates a fun, fiesta-like atmosphere for enjoying the restaurant’s fare of tacos, burritos, margaritas and other Mexican specialties.
“The owner wanted a decorative concrete finish with a unique design element replicating flower petals, in four different sizes. The design tied into other graphics in the overall theme of the restaurant,” says Todd Seaboch, architectural coatings division manager for General Coatings Corp.
The 8,000-square-foot project involved removing the existing tile and covering it with a stained concrete coating enhanced by a scattered array of flower petals sawcut into the floor by hand. General Coatings first prepped the floor by diamond grinding and then installed an epoxy primer followed by two coats of basecoat cement. Next, the crew trowel applied two layers of a fine-textured cement coating colored with a powdered stain to create a light-brown base surface.
The most challenging part of the project was laying out and applying the flower petal motif, says Seaboch. “Every petal had to be sawcut by hand due to the tight radius. We had to create different size radius cuts depending on the size of the petals. We were able to create a universal template that dictated the radius as it related to the petal length of the flower. To make the petals pop, we colored them with Westcoat Liquid Dazzle Epoxy in ruby, then we recut the lines and grouted them with a black grout."
To protect the floor from foot traffic and food stains, General Coatings sealed it with high-build clear epoxy topcoat followed by two coats of water-based polyurethane sealer. The result was a one-of-a-kind, colorful floor where casino patrons can relax and unwind.
